The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is digitizing and making public, for the first time, thousands of images from the Cape Dorset Archive made by the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative between the 1960s and 1980s. The physical archive is preserved at the McMichael and a multi-year digitization project supported by Virtual Museums Canada brings more than 4,000 prints, drawings and photographs online through a website called Iniga Ilagiit (A Place for Family).
The website will be available in English, French and Inuktitut and has been consciously developed to accommodate Northern internet connections and low bandwidth.
The project makes accessible through technology art that has never been seen by the communities that produced it.
