The Governor General awarded new Polar Medals to deserving recipients in Whitehorse in July.

The 10 recipients are Michel Allard, a scientist from Quebec city; Marianne douglas, a Whitehorse scientist; John Geiger from the Royal canadian Geographic Society in ottawa, archaeologist Ryan Harris from ottawa, ontario, Historian Louie Kamookak from Gjoa Haven, Nunavut; doug Stenton from Iqaluit who is Nunavut’s director of heritage, Nunavut Historian Shelagh Grant from Peterborough, ontario; Gerald Kisoun from Inuvik, NWT, an elder and volunteer; Health advocate Anne Morgan, from Whitehorse; and cadet leader dorothy Tootoo from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut.

The medal bears an image of the St. Roch, the RcMP ship that patrolled the Arctic in the early to mid-20th century, with a portrait of the Queen on the reverse.
