An important milestone for wildlife management in Nunavut was reached July 1 when the Government of Nunavut’s department of Environment implemented new regulations under the Wildlife Act.
The new regs uphold Inuit harvesting rights, empowers Inuit and incorporates the traditional customs and practices of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit in the official laws of the new Nunavut Wildlife Act. The regulations include new reporting requirements for wildlife related businesses, licence requirements for companies involved in wildlife viewing or filmmaking, and changes in fees for those people who require licences.
Developed in cooperation with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. and the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board, the new regulations are fully compliant with the Nunavut Land claims Agreement.
They are available in Inuktitut, English, Inuinnaqtun and French on www.gov.nu.ca.
