The Nunavut Planning Commission unveiled the territory’s new draft land use plan in Iqaluit in July. Under the new plan, 22 per cent of the territory would be protected.
The new plan categorizes land as mixed use, conditional use or limited use. Mixed use areas make up 65 per cent of the territory and have no restrictions. In conditional use areas, nine per cent of Nunavut, projects must adhere to specific requirements for operation to protect sensitive wildlife areas. Limited use areas prohibit industrial and commercial activity year‐round.
The Commission plans to hold public hearings on the new draft plan in the Kivalliq and Kitikmeot in November and potentially Pond Inlet and Iqaluit in early 2022.
